DEACON BOARD

(DIACONATE MINISTRY)
CHAIR: Delen Robinson

In accordance with the meaning of the word and practice of the New Testament, deacons are to be servants of the Church. The duties of the Deacons are to serve with the pastor and Church staff in planning and implementing worship service programs; in performing pastoral ministries; in proclaiming the gospel to believers and unbelievers; caring for Church members and other persons in the community; leading the Church to engage in a fellowship of worship, witnessing, education, and ministry; and in leading the Church by example in performing its functions.


DEACONESS BOARD
(DIACONATE MINISTRY)
CHAIR: Geraldine Kelly

In accordance with biblical standards (Romans 16) deaconesses are to:

  • Be a faithful servant of the Church,
  • Be co-workers in the service of our Lord,
  • Be supportive of the Church leadership, and
  • Be wise about what is good but innocent about what is evil.

The duties of the Deacons are to assist the pastor and deacons in meeting the needs of the sick and shut-in members of the church; cooperate fully with the pastor and deacons in planning and implementing the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper; recommend for benevolence Church members in need; and assist the pastor and deacons in caring for the members.


SUNDAY SCHOOL MINISTRY
SUPERINTENDENT: Delen Robinson
There shall be a Sunday School, divided into departments and classes for all ages under the direction of a general superintendent, for the study of God’s word. The primary task of the Sunday School shall be to lead all Church members to worship, witness, learn and minister daily; to provide and interpret information regarding the work of the Church and the denomination. Vacation Bible School shall be held each year to help further achieve the goals of the Sunday School.


CHRISTIAN EDUCATION MINISTRY
MINISTRY CHAIR: Emma Hurley
There shall be a Christian Education Program under the administration of a general director to accomplish the goals of the Baptist Training Union or its equivalent. A regular schedule of appropriate classed shall be developed.


BROTHERHOOD BIBLE CLASS
MINISTRY CHAIR: William Rush
The Brotherhood Bible Class, established in 1928, functions as an extension of the Sunday School and has as its central focus the study and understanding of the Bible. While the primary aim of the group is to foster a deeper understanding of the Scriptures, the concomitant objectives have been to promote and nurture the spirit of friendship and mutual association.

The Brotherhood Bible Class shall hold class discussions each Sunday morning and engage in other projects and activities established and/or adopted by the Class. Membership is open to all men of the Church and other men of the community who have been invited to membership.


OLLIE LOVE BIBLE CLASS
MINISTRY CHAIR: Valeria Fluker
There shall be a Christian Education Program under the administration of a general director to accomplish the goals of the Baptist Training Union or its equivalent. A regular schedule of appropriate classed shall be developed.


COLLEY MISSIONARY SOCIETY
MINISTRY CHAIR: Emma Hurley
The Colley Missionary Society shall give emphasis to missions and provide an opportunity for its members to grow in Christian knowledge and service. The Society shall also assist in providing and interpreting information regarding the work of the church.

Membership shall be maintained in the Jackson District Missionary Baptist Association and assistance rendered to this body and other churches n advancement of God’s Kingdom. One member shall be designated as advisor to the Mt. Helm Baptist Church Junior Matrons’ Auxiliary.



JUNIOR MATRONS MINISTRY
MINISTRY CHAIR:
The Junior Matrons shall give emphasis to missions and benevolence. Further the matrons shall plan and conduct activities to provide spiritual growth, Christian service, and fellowship among its members.

Membership shall be maintained in the Jackson District Missionary Baptist Association and assistance rendered to this body and other churches n advancement of God’s Kingdom.


WOMEN’S FELLOWSHIP MINISTRY
MINISTRY CHAIR:
The Women’s fellowship shall engage in activities to promote spiritual growth and fellowship among its members. Membership in the organization is open to women members of the Church.


MUSIC MINISTRY
MINISTRY CHAIR: Naomi Sams
There shall be a Church-wide music program supported by the several choirs; namely, the Senior Choir, the Youth Choir, the Sanctuary Choir, and the Men’s Ensemble. The music program shall be under the leadership of the choir directors whose responsibilities shall be to teach music, train persons to lead, sing and play music; provide music for Church Services and programs and to provide information regarding the church in relation to the music program.


USHER BOARD MINISTRY
MINISTRY CHAIR: W.D. Belt
The ushers are to greet people as they enter the Church, seat people at the proper time, hand out orders of worship and provide other materials at the time of seasting. The ushers will attend to the needs of the congregation, the Pastor and visitors for all regularly scheduled worship services and special occasions where such service is required.


CHILDREN’S CHURCH MINISTRY
MINISTRY CHAIR: Barnessa Cook
There shall be a Children’s Church which shall have as its major purpose the provision of Sunday morning Worship Services for youth age 12 and under. The Children’s Church shall provide spiritual leadership and fellowship activities for the youth of the Church and community.


AUDITING COMMITTEE

COMMITTEE CHAIR:
The Auditing Committee shall consist of three members with accounting experience, who shall be responsible for auditing the Financial Records of the Church and its organizations from time to time as the Church deems necessary.


NOMINATING COMMITTEE
COMMITTEE CHAIR: Charles Holmes
At the September quarterly business meeting in even years preceding the annual meeting of the Church, a Nominating Committee shall be selected. This Committee shall nominate persons for the following positions and committees:

  • Treasurer
  • Church Clerk
  • Financial Secretary
  • Director of Christian Education
  • Superintendent of Sunday School
  • Other (s) as specified in the Bylaws of the Church
  • Auditing Committee


LONG-RANGE PLANNING COMMITTEE
(S.A.I.L. – Strategic Analysis and Implementation Leadership Team)
COMMITTEE CHAIR: Valeria Fluker

The function of this committee will be to study long-range Church and community needs and to set long-range objectives, goals, and strategies. The membership of this committee shall consist of not less than five persons.


PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE
COMMITTEE CHAIR: Barbara Hilliard
The responsibility of this committee shall be to communicate the Church’s mission and work members of the Church and the community including audio and/or videotaping of the worship services. This committee will also prepare and present to the Church membership a Calendar of Events for the ensuing calendar year.


CATCH-THE-VISION COMMITTEE
COMMITTEE CHAIR: Walter Reed
The purpose of this committee will be to assist in coordinating special fund-raising projects to support priorities in Church development related to improving and enhancing the physical environment of the Church. This committee will also provide leadership in identifying and assessing the feasibility of acquiring other properties in the immediate vicinity of the Church and make recommendations for the purchase when appropriate.


PERSONNEL COMMITTEE
COMMITTEE CHAIR: Louis Beverly
This committee is responsible for overseeing all matters relating to personnel administration in the Church. The committee acts for the Church in all matters requiring their attention. The personnel Committee shall be composed of seven (7) members: chairperson of the Trustee Board, appointee of the chairperson of the Deaconess Board, appointee of the chairman of the Deacon Board; chairperson of the Finance Committee, two persons appointed by the pastor and one person elected at large by the Church membership. The chairperson of the Trustee Board shall serve as chairperson of the Personnel Committee.


FINANCE COMMITTEE
COMMITTEE CHAIR: Eunice T. Smith
The Finance Committee, a committee responsible to and reporting to the Board of Trustees, shall be composed of seven members; two persons appointed by the Pastor, two persons appointed by the Trustee Board, one person appointed by the Deacon Board and one person elected by the Church-at-large. The Finance Committee serves as the principal entity to consolidate and to present the annual budget for Church approval.


HISTORY COMMITTEE
COMMITTEE CHAIR: Levernis E. Crosby
This committee shall be charged with the responsibility of preserving the history of the Church and assisting in planning for the observance of historical events of the Church. Membership on the History Committee shall consist of not less than five persons.


WOMEN’S DAY COMMITTEE
COMMITTEE CHAIR: Tori Robinson
There shall be a rotating Women’s Day Committee. It shall be the duty of this committee to assist in setting the financial goal of the annual Women’s Day Drive and to promote and encourage the full participation of all Church members, especially the women. Further, the committee shall plan and present the annual Women’s Day Program and related activities.


MEN’S DAY COMMITTEE
COMMITTEE CHAIR: William Harkless
There shall be a rotating Men’s Day Committee. It shall be the duty of this committee to assist in setting the financial goal of the annual Men’s Day Drive and to promote and encourage the full participation of all Church members, especially the men. Further, the committee shall plan and present the annual Men’s Day Program and related activities.


GRADUATION COMMITTEE
COMMITTEE CHAIR: John Hurley
The purpose of the Graduation Committee is to recognize current members of the church with a certificate, bible and monetary gift when they graduate from high school. The Committee reserves the right to request proof of graduation. The ceremony shall take place once per year during the month of May or June.


CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS COMMITTEE
COMMITTEE CHAIR: Eunice T. Smith
The Constitution and By-Laws committee shall be a standing committee appointed or reappointed every two years and shall have the responsibility of updating and revising the existing constitution every four years in odd years.


SPECIAL EVENTS COMMITTEE(S)
COMMITTEE CHAIR(S):
Such committees shall be charged with the responsibility of planning appropriate programs and related activities for such occasions as Homecoming, Friends and Family Day, Annual Christmas Banquet and all other programs that are not identified in this document as being the responsibility of other committees. Membership of such committees shall consist of not less than five persons to be appointed by the Pastor.


BOARD OF TRUSTEES

CHAIR: Louis Beverly
The Trustees shall conduct the business of the Church in accordance with the statues of the state of Mississippi; maintain and improve the property of the church; be responsible for the management of Church finances; and other specific duties as outlined in the Church Constitution and Bylaws.
